Full view. Green Library. It is true that Los Angeles has attracted many different cultures to settle, but people tend to stay where they are comfortable and socially accepted.
That place is with others they can identify with. Communities based on culture, ethnicity and social class are then easily formed. Los Angeles is a very large and very populated city made up of many of these communities, all scattered and many located very closely to one another.

This is why Dr. Islands are separated by open waters and the communities are separated by grey areas of land. Within these communities, personal and group identities are formed. Young people get their ideals, values and belief systems from the social institutions they are involved with such as schools, siblings, parents, religious organizations, peers and of course the media of our culture. Some believe it was the poor housing and displacement that lead to street gangs. Social conditions such as racism and police brutality helped to solidify street gangs. The people in these communities naturally banded together to protect themselves and fought other gangs or rival communities.
Police took advantage of this community rivalry and hoped they would kill each other off if they kept killing at the rate that they were.

The way that the Los Angeles Police Department deals with young gang bangers shapes and reinforces gang culture, only making it stronger. Sometimes it can get to a point where an individual is more secure in a world of penitentiaries than the free world and cannot function in normal everyday life. One of my favorite quotes said by Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, is that building jails to address gangs is like building cemeteries to address A.
Father Greg Boyle understands that in order to make change, we need to be compassionate and forgiving to help ex-gang members get into a more stable life and then they will pass this to their children by default or example.
Lets look at why gang members are recruiting younger and younger members all the time, or rather why younger kids are turning to gangs. Many of these young, poor, displaced and abused children look to the behavior of their older siblings and their parents who were involved in violence and drug dealing crack cocaine to get by. Most have a very rough family life. This behavior becomes the norm and impacts their identification of member of society as their young minds form. Before taking this class and having this experience I believed that most kids who joined gangs are trying to seek acceptance and a place in society where they fit in and belong.
I watched a video interview with Father Greg Boyle. His words set my assumptions straight.
